In terms of geography and culture, the Dolpo area of Nepal is similar to Tibet. The largest district in Nepal, Dolpa District, is bordered by Tibet to the north.

The Shey Phoksundo National Park encompassed one-third of the area. The Dolpa and Mugu districts in Nepal's Mid-Western Region make up this 3555 sq km national park, which was created in 1984. The elevation difference varies from 2130 m to 6885 m.
